Nashville Shelby Park which opened on July 4,1912 is a large Nashville urban park located just three miles east from downtown.
It has multiple softball and baseball diamonds, a dog park, playgrounds, two golf courses, and open areas that are used for sports of all kinds. Public bathrooms are located near the sports fields, and a community center.
There is a small but beautiful lake in Nashville Shelby Park that you can picnic around and feed the ducks. Shelby Park Picnic pavilions can be reserve for events. The children have play areas and jungle gyms.
If you have a boat, there is a boat launch ramp into the Cumberland River in the park.
For the golfers there are two golf courses close to the park. Shelby Golf Course and Vinny Links Golf Course.
Nashville Shelby Park has multiple softball and baseball fields to play on for organized games. The Belmont Bruins college baseball team plays a portion of its home games at the park at the Old Timers Baseball Field.
Shelby Bottoms Nature Park entrance is under the train trestle. It has 810 acres of park and Green way. The Shelby Bottoms Nature Center located just inside the Nature park that tells about the park. There are about 12 miles of Shelby Bottoms Greenway trails and a pedestrian bridge that will take you across the Cumberland River to the Two Rivers Park and Greenway.
The trails in the nature park are for walking and biking. It is called the Shelby Bottoms Greenway. There are both primitive and paved trails in the park that will take you along the Cumberland River and loop thru fields and woods. A lot of the park is a flood plain which keeps it from being developed. Bird lovers will like to hike this area. It has three miles of Cumberland River frontage and twelve miles of trails.
The Shelby Bottoms Nature Center, which opened 1 December 2007, is a great place to begin your visit to the Park. Pick up a map, talk to a naturalist, learn about the natural history and history of the area, get a view of the Cumberland River, or get a program schedule of upcoming events.
Learn about a “green roof”, see how a “waterless urinal” works and view other sustainable features of this new facility. Programs are offered year-round on a variety of topics.
The Nashville Science Centers Astronomy Club comes out on occasion to view the sky away from the glow of the city lights. They set up behind the Shelby Bottoms Nature Center.
You can access the park from Fatherland St, Shelby Ave, and Riverside Drive.
Directions I24 Exit 49 going north to end of ramp and take a right onto Shelby Street. Go to 1st stop light and take a right on 5th street. Follow 5th Street until it dead ends into a stop sign. Take a left onto Davidson Street. Follow Davidson past a Par Three Golf Course on your left and river on your right. Immediately past the golf course you will see Shelby Park. Turn left just pass the Golf Course and Shelby Park will be on your left in a couple of blocks.
